Parcels trade: the good, the bad, and the ugly

“What do a clothing designer and a manufacturer of counterfeit medications have in common? For Praew, an up-and-coming clothing designer who runs Lanna Clothes Design in Thailand, and Paul, who manufactures and sells fake medicines to customers around the world, it’s simple: both rely on e-commerce to grow their business and send hundreds of parcels to customers overseas every month.”

Among the latest trade-related publications from the OECD, available through the WTO’s subscription to the OECD iLibrary, read more about the intricacies of parcels and the work done by customs officials worldwide to ensure that legal goods cross borders expeditiously, while illicit or illegal goods do not.

Agricultural Technology Choice and Transport

Rubba Ali, A. Federico Barra, Claudia N. Berg, Richard Damania, John D. Nash, Jason Russ. (2015) “Agricultural Technology Choice and Transport.” Policy Research Working Paper, no. 7272. [doi]

Abstract:

This paper addresses an old and recurring theme in development economics: the slow adoption of new technologies by farmers in many developing countries. The paper explores a somewhat novel link to explain this puzzle—the link between market access and the incentives to adopt a new technology when there are non-convexities. … Consistent with the theory, analysis finds that transportation costs are critical in determining technology choices, with a greater responsiveness among farmers who adopt modern technologies, and at times a perverse (negative) response to lower transport costs among those who employ more traditional techniques. In sum, the paper presents compelling evidence that the constraints to the adoption of modern technologies and access to markets are interconnected, and so should be targeted jointly.

Export Competition between Landlocked and Coastal Countries

This paper analyzes economic rivalry between two firms using an international Cournot duopoly model, where a firm from a landlocked country (LC) and a firm from a coastal country (CC) compete in a third-country market. It is assumed that the landlocked country firm adopts a transport-cost reducing R&D subsidized by its government, while the CC government imposes a toll fee on the LC firm. The findings show since a change in the LC’s transport-cost reducing R&D subsidy has a positive effect on its export and a negative effect on the CC’s export, both measures have effective strategic export policies.
