The Losses from Trade Restrictions

As a response to the trade collapse in the global crisis of 2008 and 2009, temporary trade restrictions have emerged in several countries. With analyzing the dynamics of a negative macroeconomic shock in the home economy first, and the subsequent introduction of trade restrictions in the foreign economy second, I show that both economies are in a worse position than they were during the economic downturn.

Administrative Barriers to Trade

We build a model of administrative barriers to trade to understand how they affect trade volumes, shipping decisions and welfare. Because administrative costs are incurred with every shipment, exporters have to decide how to break up total trade into individual shipments. Consumers value frequent shipments, because they enable them to consume close to their preferred dates. Hence per-shipment costs create a welfare loss.

The effect of antidumping and countervailing investigations on the market value of firms

Using a sample of listed Chinese firms between 2006 and 2012, we analyze the effect of international business strategy and government assistance on the stock market response to antidumping and countervailing investigations. We find a significantly negative abnormal return surrounding the announcements of antidumping and countervailing investigations. Furthermore, the establishment of a plant in a non-subject or “non-named”1 country and government assistance are positively related to the abnormal returns of antidumping and countervailing investigations. Our results suggest that government assistance is as important as strategic restructuring to offset the negative effect of trade remedy investigations.

The Effects of Trade and Investment Liberalization on Korea’s FDI

While most of RTA talks have incorporated rules on industrial tariff and non-tariff barriers, services, and trade remedies in the past, countries now seek to co-operate on other areas of policymaking, such as rules on investment. This article provides detailed analysis on the effects of trade and investment liberalization on Korea’s inward and outward foreign direct investment (FDI) by collecting all relevant information on substantive investment provisions contained in all Korea FTAs in force as May 2013 and constructing indices of the extensiveness of investment provisions.

Bilateral trade and the environment

This study develops a trade–environment model based on new trade theory and emphasizes the role of international productivity differences in quantifying environmental consequences of trade. I introduce environmental policy and factor endowment differentials into a multi-country general equilibrium model of bilateral trade with random productivities and trade barriers. I calibrate the model for the OECD countries by estimating trade barriers and productivity parameters so as to match bilateral manufacturing trade shares. The calibrated model is used to analyze impacts of free trade and two types of environmental harmonization policies. I find that full trade liberalizations help to lower OECD pollution emissions by 32%, and about half of the decline in pollution is due to international productivity differences. I also show that harmonization of environmental taxes across the OECD countries is predicted to be more effective than the harmonization of pollution quotas in reducing aggregate pollution while under both policies trade impacts are relatively small.

Measuring the Impact of Trade Protection on Industrial Production Size / Wei Tian andMiaojie Yu

Trade theory has no clear prediction on how import protection affects an importing sector’s relative size. In this paper, we estimate the impact of US trade protection on industrial production relative size based on a translog GDP functional system. Using an industrial panel data set and controlling for factor endowments and technology improvement, we find empirical evidence that trade protection does not help much increase a sector’s relative size. Such findings are also robust to both the inclusion of the role of political economy and the coverage of various non-tariff measures as proxies of industrial protection.
