A4T 2019 Session 49: The Economy According to Her

Organizer International Trade Centre, Center for Economic and Policy Research & European University Institute

WTO Library 2019-07-04 10:45-11:45

Women are shaping every aspect of the global economy, including as leaders in finance, investment or trade.

This event celebrates the launch of a new publication that collects the views and ideas on economic governance from over 20 female leaders in policymaking, academia, private business and journalism.

Built around four sections, the book gathers insights and forward-looking suggestions regarding current challenges in finance, trade, investment and the global labour market in a context marked by rapid technological, political, environmental and social change.

Authored entirely by female contributors, this publication stands for gender equality not by discussing issues that matter for women in the economy but rather by having women proposing solutions to economic and financial issues that matter for all.

Join us for a lively discussion with the knowledgeable authors to hear their views on the key economic issues facing our time.

A4T 2019 Session 17: Leveraging services for development: policies and prospects

Organizer Asian Development Bank & Asian Development Bank Institute

WTO Library 2019-07-03 13:30-14:00

The services economy is on the rise all around the world. Services provide, in nearly all economies, the largest proportion of economic activity and employment. At the same time, the services economy remains relatively under-studied. The book presents latest evidence on how technologies and globalization have transformed the services industry.

Today, services are increasingly tradable under WTO rules and regional trade agreements. Some services sub-sectors are also seeing rates of productivity growth that are comparable to manufacturing. At the same time, services increasingly contribute to manufacturing success and that countries’ overall economic competitiveness hinges crucially on the availability of high-quality and affordable services inputs. Furthermore, a well-functioning services sector can accelerate human development through better access to basic needs, such as education, energy, finance, health, water and sanitation. Services can also become a source of good jobs that have less negative environmental and social externalities.

Overall, the ongoing structural transformation towards a services economy is a unique change to achieve long run income growth, which in turn helps to promote sustainable development. This book gives ideas on the how and is thus an indispensable read for researchers and policy makers alike.

A4T 2019 Session 12: Trade and eliminating extreme poverty

Organizer World Bank Group & WTO

WTO Library 2019-07-03 12:15-12:45

The session will provide new evidence on how international trade can create valuable economic opportunities for the poorest and most vulnerable who live in rural areas, work in the informal sector, live in fragile and conflict-affected regions and face gender inequality. The evidence is based on 8 country/regional studies conducted in the developing world, namely, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Ghana, India, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Viet Nam. It will also highlight the constraints that hold back the poorest from taking full advantage of the benefits of trade and what policymakers can do to remedy the problems.

Panellists

  • Paul Brenton Trade Practice Leader in the Africa Region, World Bank Group
  • Roberta Piermartini Senior Economist, World Trade Organization
  • Robert Teh Chief of the Economic Modelling and Quantitative Analysis Unit, World Trade Organization

A4T 2019 Session 7: Making the Grade: How TBT and SPS promote regulatory cooperation and help you trade

Organizer OECD & WTO

WTO Library 2019-07-03 11:15-11:45

Heads of the OECD and WTO Secretariats will launch a joint publication: “Facilitating trade through regulatory cooperation: The case of the WTO’s TBT/ SPS Agreements and Committees”.

Diversity in regulation, while sometimes resulting from legitimate differences in societal preferences and priorities, can in some cases be narrowed to facilitate trade and promote better regulation. International regulatory cooperation (IRC) between Members, through various mechanisms and settings, can help to reduce trade costs while respecting differences in regulatory objectives.

This publication explores how the WTO TBT and SPS Agreements, and their related Committees, set out and implement disciplines for domestic regulations and standards that at the same time create opportunities for IRC to facilitate trade. It emphasizes how key disciplines of the Agreements (e.g. notification of draft measures, and the use of international standards) and practices of the Committees (e.g. discussion of specific trade concerns, development of guidance through decisions and recommendations) promote cooperation.

This publication was co-authored by the OECD and WTO Secretariats. It was developed within the framework of OECD work on IRC, as part of a series of case studies of international organizations.

Trade War: a G20 Truce in Sight?

The Economist Intelligence Unit will be offering a 30-minute webinar on 27 June 2019 on the them “Trade War: a G20 Truce in Sight?” Two speakers, Agathe Demarais (Director of Global Forecasting) and Cailin Birch (Global Economist) will discuss the ongoing trade war between China and the US and the possible outcomes of a side discussion between heads of state of both countries later this month during the G20 meeting.

Registration is required to attend and can be completed using the form available here: https://pages.eiu.com/June-19-US-China-trade-war-webinar—USEMEA—Subscription-NB_Registration-Page.html

A full description of the webinar is as follows:

The ongoing trade war between the US and China has captured the headlines in recent weeks. In May the US increased existing tariffs of 10% on US$200bn worth of Chinese merchandise imports to duty rates of 25%, and China responded by raising its import tariffs on around US$60bn of US goods.

The stakes were raised again a few days later with a US proposal to apply additional tariffs across Chinese merchandise imports not yet covered by punitive tariffs, worth around US$300bn per year.

Against this backdrop, The Economist Intelligence Unit has come to the view that the most likely outcome of a planned meeting between US president Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting on June 28th-29th will be of a truce in tariffs escalation, probably until at least 2020.

But questions remain, such as:

    • Is a US-China trade deal still a realistic prospect, or will the two sides fail to reach a compromise?
    • Is the US going to take the first step towards de-escalation, or is the ball in China’s court?
    • What happens if no deal is inked, and what would this mean for global growth?

Economist Intelligence Unit is a resource available to WTO staff, Member State delegations, and WTO Library patrons, through a subscription managed by the WTO Library. If there are any questions about this or other Library resources, please do not hesitate to contact us at web.librarian@wto.org.

Brazil: Boom, Bust, and Road to Recovery

IMF has recently published a new book, Brazil: Boom, Bust, & Road to Recovery, on economic conditions, development, growth, and policy in Brazil:

“Brazil is at crossroads, emerging slowly from a historic recession that was preceded by a huge economic boom. Reasons for the historic bust following a boom are manifold. Policy mistakes were an important contributory factor, and included the pursuit of countercyclical policies, introduced to deal with the effects of the global financial crisis, beyond the point where they were helpful. More fundamentally, it reflects longstanding structural weaknesses plaguing the economy, that also help explain Brazil’s uninspiring growth performance over the past four decades.”

The book is available here for consultation and download from the IMF eLibrary, with access facilitated by the WTO Library for WTO staff and library patrons.

  • Key risks: trade tensions, China slowdown and high debt
  • Act now to boost opportunities

Google’s new Dataset Search

Google has announced the launch of a new tool, a Google Scholar for data. The tool, Dataset Search, aims to make it possible to search across different online data repositories, rendering datasets retrievable even when published in disparate and unconnected locations and resources.

The initial release of the search will cover environmental and social sciences, government data, and datasets from news organizations. It is expected that, as the source becomes more widely used, the amount of data should increase, as institutions, organizations, publishers, and individual scientists and researchers make their information more openly accessible.  Aided by open data initiatives around the world, it is hoped that the project will improve data transparency and the quality of research produced, as a greater quantity of and more diverse data will be available for consideration and comparison.

For more on this product, visit the article at The Verge here: https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/5/17822562/google-dataset-search-service-scholar-scientific-journal-open-data-access

OECD: Why government subsidies are bad for global competition

“As a global community, we also value fairness and competitiveness in international markets. The rules that govern international trade were created precisely to level the global playing field and ensure fair competition that drives innovation and benefits consumers. But some governments still support (or subsidise) certain firms or domestic industries to give them a leg up on the competition. This can happen for a number of reasons, but is ultimately to the detriment of consumers, businesses, and jobs. We often don’t know who the “real” winners would be if the competition were truly fair.”

Check out one of the latest OECD opinion pieces, this one on why government subsidies are bad for global competition.

The full piece is available here: https://www.oecd.org/trade/why-subsidies-are-bad-global-competition

Parcels trade: the good, the bad, and the ugly

“What do a clothing designer and a manufacturer of counterfeit medications have in common? For Praew, an up-and-coming clothing designer who runs Lanna Clothes Design in Thailand, and Paul, who manufactures and sells fake medicines to customers around the world, it’s simple: both rely on e-commerce to grow their business and send hundreds of parcels to customers overseas every month.”

Among the latest trade-related publications from the OECD, available through the WTO’s subscription to the OECD iLibrary, read more about the intricacies of parcels and the work done by customs officials worldwide to ensure that legal goods cross borders expeditiously, while illicit or illegal goods do not.
