Thomas Piketty: new thoughts on capital in the twenty-first century (TED talk)

With the launch of his book Capital in the Twenty-First Century in early 2014, French economist Thomas Piketty grabbed international attention with his thesis explaining wealth and economic inequality in the twenty-first century.  An English translation of his 2013 book Le Capital au XXIe siècle, Piketty’s book reached number one on the New York Times bestselling hardcover nonfiction list and spawned debate and discussion in not only economic news outlets and blogs, but also those catering to readers interested in technology, popular culture, and science.

In his June 2014 TED talk, embedded below, Piketty presented his thesis and the data set that led him to the simple formula: r is greater than g (return on capital is generally higher than economic growth).
